In 1892 the solicitors of Portsmouth and Southampton formed an association to liase with the National Law Society
At the same time they were hoping to form a local body who could help members of the profession in carrying out their tasks, give an opportunity for members to meet each other, and help the general public in their search for local firms to assist them with their legal problems.
It was agreed that the society should operate within the geographical county of Hampshire.
The Society became incorporated in 1897.
The Society Today
The Society is managed by an Executive Committee and is divided up into various sub-committees – a list of these and the appropriate contact for each is listed below. The committee meet bi-monthly throughout the year at members’ offices and are elected annually at the AGM.
The main role of the society is to support the profession locally, offer training, social events and represent members’ interests.
The society is able to offer advice to members of the public on the following matters
- Finding a local solicitor with a particular specialism.
- Tracing a solicitor or firm where there has been a change of name, merger or closure.
