HMRC mandatory tax adviser registration

HMRC’s mandatory tax adviser registration scheme doesn’t only affect firms giving specialist advice.

Submitting tax returns, making payments or communicating with HMRC on behalf of clients is enough to bring your firm within scope.

If your firm is required to register and doesn’t have an agent services account with HMRC, the deadline to apply is 18 August 2026.

We have also just published climate change guidance for in-house legal counsel.

Our new guidance supports in-house legal teams in the public and private sectors across England and Wales in applying our guidance on the impact of climate change on solicitors, which sets out solicitors’ core professional duties in the context of climate change. The guide and checklist sit alongside that guidance and helps in-house counsel translate those duties into practice within their organisations, recognising the distinctive constraints and opportunities of an in-house role.

The guide provides legal, strategic and governance-focused advice, and a practical checklist.
